mental development

The brain (or better still, conscience) goes through three stages throughout a person’s life,
Infantile Dependence, Semi-Independence, Independence

Infantile Dependence (or Unconsciousness)
The virgin brain absorbs the earliest information without special filters and adapts to the outer world without inner conditioning or prejudice. It is very reactive and has no rational or logical skills, that is to say it responds directly to the stimuli it receives. At this stage (usually from 0 to 2-3 years of age), the child is not yet self-conscious, since, for instance, he/she is unable to recognize himself in the mirror and, just like most animals, he/she looks at his/her image thinking that what he/she sees is something or somebody else.

Semi-Independence (or Semi-Conscience)
The brain has built an early solid celebral base of information, let us say an early “Ego”, an early “conscience” which also represents his/her earliest data processing center. The answer to the stimuli from the world around him/her is no longer necessarily direct and reactive, but it more and more often goes through the filter of this cerebral base which begins to process and influence one’s final answer. This base of information becomes an early inner point of reference for one’s own actions. At this stage, one is still half animal and half human.

This is the most delicate stage ever. An Ego which is still not fully shaped is an Ego continuously risking his/her life: he/she risks destruction or insanity, he/she risks becoming a megalomaniac or the extention of another Ego. His/Her parents are the educators and guardians of this Ego up until he becomes independent. Many parents, however, do not perform this educational duty owing to carelessness, actual inability or malevolence. As a result, their kids will find themselves confined to a state of Semi-Independence even at the age of 20, 30, or 40 – virtually for their whole lives.

Independence (or mature conscience)
An Ego who has reached mental independence, who cannot easily be manipulated, who is present to himself/herself, organically and mentally balanced, respectful of others, aware that each life is a unique and unrepeatable mind and body.
